2023 Ram 1500 TRX vs 2023 Ford F-150 Raptor

In 2023, truck buyers have a handful of options to choose from when deciding which factory-built, off-road ready, half-ton pickup truck to purchase. With offerings from all of the big three American automakers, plus recent news about the Japanese and EV manufacturers releasing their own off-road ready pickup trucks, the segment is hotter than ever. The original Ford F-150 Raptor may have started this segment, but with the recent debut of the Ram 1500 TRX, customers have a new entrant in deciding which vehicle is the pinnacle of the off-road ready pickup trucks.

Interior Features

Although style and design are subjective, when it comes to interior cabin materials, craftsmanship and overall fit & finish, the 2023 Ram TRX takes the cake over the Ford Raptor. Complete with luxury full-leather high-back heated seats, heated perforated leather-wrapped, flat-bottom steering wheel, a UConnect 5® 12” vertical touchscreen with navigation, a multifunction heads-up display system (HUD) and an available 19-speaker harman/kardon® premium audio system, the Ram 1500 TRX’s interior is a great place to be in. Comparatively, the 2023 F-150 Raptor can be optioned to have a 12” SYNC4 integrated multimedia system, Alcantara and suede Recaro sport front seats and an 18-speaker Bang & Olufsen Unleashed® audio system.

Performance & Capability

The 2023 Ram 1500 TRX is powered by a 6.2L supercharged HEMI® V8 that puts out a whopping 702 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque. To live up to its off-road performance reputation, the TRX comes standard with 35” Goodyear® Wrangler All-Terrain Tires, exclusively designed Bilstein Black Hawk® e2 shock system with nitrogen gas charged dampers, and six available off-road drive modes to choose from. On the other hand, under the hood of the 2023 Raptor is Ford’s 3.5L EcoBoost V6 engine, tuned to produce 450 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque. To get similar performance to the TRX, buyers need to upgrade to the considerably more expensive Raptor R, which is powered by Ford’s newly developed “Predator” 5.2L supercharged V8 engine that produces similar, yet lower performance outputs of 700 horsepower and 640 lb-ft of torque.

Safety & Driver Assistance

The Ram TRX is one of only three pickup trucks to receive an IIHS Top Safety Pick designation. The IIHS or Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is an independent, nonprofit organization that conducts a multitude of tests on new vehicles to determine their performance in a variety of different collision situations. Equipped with cutting edge safety and driver assistance technologies such as a 360-degree camera, reverse steering control, and available Full-Speed Forward Collision Warning Plus front crash prevention, it’s no surprise that the Ram TRX is the safer pickup truck option in the segment. Although the 2023 Ford Raptor also features an available 360-degree camera system and modern safety technologies through its Co-Pilot 360 Assist system, the truck only managed to secure top safety rating for two out of three available cab configurations.

Frame

The 2023 Ram 1500 TRX features a ladder-type frame that is designed for optimal strength and capability as it has been built with multiple interlocking points to help increase both frame stability and durability. Comparatively, the 2023 Ford Raptor is constructed with a conventional high-strength frame that, in its own right, is able to handle off-road conditions. However, its design does not sport the same architectural integrity offered by the 2023 Ram 1500 TRX.

Price Comparison

The 2023 Ram 1500 TRX has a starting price of $104,895*, while the 2023 Ford F-150 Raptor starts at $93,925*. Although this price difference may seem like the Raptor is the bargain option between the two, buyers should keep in mind that the 2023 Raptor comes equipped with a 3.5L EcoBoost V6 engine that produces a mere 450 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque, whereas the Ram 1500 TRX comes standard with more powerful 6.2L supercharged HEMI® V8 that produces 702 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque. For buyers to get their hands on a truck that makes similar power, they’d have to opt for the considerably more expensive 2023 F-150 Raptor R that starts at an estimated $109,145* USD (no Canadian price estimates have been released yet) and produces two horsepower and ten lb-ft of torque less than the 2023 Ram 1500 TRX.

Why is the 2023 Ram TRX the best truck in its segment?

Although the Ford F-150 Raptor has been credited in recent years for creating the factory-built off-road truck segment, the Ram 1500 TRX has redefined the segment with its impeccable capability credentials, high-strength underpinnings, cutting-edge safety & infotainment technologies and top-notch performance outputs. Highlighted by its powerful supercharged HEMI®  V8 engine and further supported by its reinforced suspension and traction control management systems, the 2023 Ram 1500 TRX is leaps and bounds ahead of the competition.
